What Hobart and Launceston have in common
Both cities use the statewide calendar for dates such as New Year’s Day, Australia Day, Eight Hours Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday and the King’s Birthday. You do not need two versions of those dates. Start with one statewide list, then create a regional column for each workplace location.
This is useful when coordinating a household, a business with multiple branches or a trip between the two cities. A shared statewide holiday may make scheduling straightforward; a regional holiday may mean one workplace is closed while another continues its normal roster.
Royal Hobart Regatta versus Recreation Day
The 2027 Regatta public holiday is Monday 8 February. Its coverage includes the published southern area description, with exclusions. Recreation Day is Monday 1 November in the parts of Tasmania that do not observe Royal Hobart Regatta. The two dates form alternative regional patterns rather than two extra statewide holidays.
Use the Royal Hobart Regatta coverage guide and Recreation Day guide when your location is near a boundary or is specifically excluded. Do not decide from a postcode’s proximity to Hobart alone: match the workplace location against the official coverage wording.

The show holiday follows coverage, not where you buy a ticket
Royal Launceston Show’s 2027 holiday is Thursday 7 October and covers the published northern municipal areas. Royal Hobart Show’s holiday is Thursday 21 October for its stated southern coverage. These are separate from the event programme, which may include activities across more than one day.
A visitor can attend either show, but the public holiday applying to a workplace still depends on the declared coverage and work arrangements. For a business serving customers across Tasmania, distinguish the regional closure in communications so people elsewhere do not assume the whole state has a day off.
Cup holidays are easy to misread
Launceston Cup is Wednesday 24 February 2027. The calendar notes generally Tasmanian State Service application and a mix of all-day and from-11-am coverage in the published areas. Devonport Cup is Wednesday 6 January and is generally a half-day holiday for the Tasmanian State Service in the municipal area of Devonport.
These limitations matter more than a simple date match. A calendar that shows “Launceston Cup” without the coverage or timing can give a private-sector employee the wrong impression. Keep Cup dates in a separate category and use the Launceston Cup page to read the notes alongside the date.
Northern Tasmania has more than one local calendar
Burnie, Devonport, Flinders Island and King Island also have their own show-related entries. “Northern Tasmania” is therefore too broad to use as a single holiday rule. Agfest’s public holiday applies to Circular Head only, even though people travel to the event from elsewhere.
The regional holiday guide brings the entries together. Start with the municipal area where you work, identify the relevant entry and read any exception. If two people work in different areas, compare their calendars separately before looking for a common day to travel.
A practical way to compare two workplaces
Make four columns: holiday, date, workplace A coverage and workplace B coverage. Mark a day as shared only after checking both locations. Add a fifth column for limited application or part-day notes. That simple comparison is more reliable than placing every regional holiday into one diary and assuming all of them apply.
For a local Thursday show holiday, a standard weekend roster plus approved Friday leave may create a four-day break. It will only work if that Thursday applies to your workplace. Use our 2027 long-weekend guide for the statewide options first, then layer in the local opportunities.
Common questions

Is Agfest a public holiday across Tasmania?
No. The calendar’s Agfest public holiday entry applies to the municipal area of Circular Head only.
Is a show holiday the same as the whole show programme?
No. The public holiday is a declared date with specific coverage. Event opening dates and ticket arrangements must be checked separately.
